Ronnie Whelan is an Irish former professional football player who played as a midfielder and played for Liverpool during the 1980s. He is a former Liverpool captain who scored 73 goals in his 493 appearances. Ronnie was also voted 30th in a worldwide poll asking about the “100 Players Who Shook the Kop”. He scored one of the greater Cup final goals in 1983 against Man Utd at Wembley and another for Republic of Ireland vs. USSR in the UEFA European Championships of 1988.

Bruce Grobbelaar is a Zimbabwean former professional football player who played as a goalkeeper for Liverpool from 1981-1994 as well as the Zimbabwean National Team. Bruce is one of the most iconic goalkeepers in Liverpool FC’s 130-year history. Famous for his “wobbly-legs” during Liverpool’s European Cup triumph in Rome 1984, Bruce played 628 games for the Reds, winning 6 First Division titles, 3 FA cups, and 3 League cups in a glittering 14-year career.

On Saturday, September 17th, Ronnie Whelan and Bruce Grobbelaar came out and spent time at our Junior Reds field. They were able to give out autographs, take photos, and answer questions. Enthusiasm at their appearance was felt from the kids as well as the parents.

When asked about what they’d seen at the Junior Reds field, Ronnie and Bruce shared this:

…Great to see camps like this. Kids playing football, both boys and girls and parents all here for the afternoon.

It’s great to see and make sure that the best game in the world grows, and here in America it certainly is.

Thank you to both Ronnie Whelan and Bruce Grobbelaar for coming out and spending time with the kids as well as the parents. Everyone had a great time, and we can’t thank you enough!
